Heavy rain triggered flash floods in Grand Canyon National Park that damaged or destroyed roughly 40 percent of the 12.5-mile Transcanyon Waterline, the sole pipeline supplying water to visitors. At least two people were reported killed, more than a dozen people were left missing or unaccounted for, and more than 60 people were evacuated by air from Phantom Ranch and the North Kaibab Trail. A $200 million repair and replacement project for the line, completed in the 1970s and broken more than 85 times since 2010, was already underway before the floods.
