Expeditions in 2023 mapped five carcass sites containing beaked and baleen whale fossils on the southeastern Indian Ocean floor. The site is reported as the largest and deepest whale graveyard documented to date and supports communities of jellyfish, tubeworms, brittle stars, sea cucumbers, squat lobsters, and saltwater clams. Age estimates for the bones remain disputed between sources.
