Expeditions in 2023 using a Chinese submersible located five carcass sites containing whale fossils at depths up to 23,000 feet in the southeastern Indian Ocean's Diamantina Fracture Zone. The bones, including skulls from beaked and baleen whales, date to at least 5.3 million years ago, with marine organisms observed at the locations.
