The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected efforts by Meta, Alphabet’s Google, ByteDance’s TikTok and Snap to dismiss consolidated claims that their platforms were designed to be addictive to minors. The ruling treats Section 230 as a defense rather than immunity and finds the companies’ appeal premature. More than 3,000 lawsuits from individuals, states, school districts and local governments may now proceed in federal court.
