The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index registered a preliminary reading of 44.8 for May, down from 49.8 in April and marking the third consecutive monthly decline. Inflation rose to 3.8 percent year-over-year for the period ending in April, the highest since May 2023, with 57 percent of respondents citing high prices as eroding their finances.
