A six-year-old Chinese girl identified as Mei died one week after receiving an experimental spinal gene therapy infusion in March 2025. The treatment, funded by her parents at a cost exceeding US$800,000, targeted Snijders Blok-Campeau syndrome caused by a single-base DNA mutation. An investigation by Science and Retraction Watch published July 24 reported that a related animal study in Nature omitted any reference to the human case.
