Peer-reviewed research published in Frontiers in Ethology describes two incidents in which orcas in the Gulf of California held a dead sunfish by the tail while another rammed it until it fragmented. Video of the events was released by the NGO Beneath The Waves, with the study appearing on July 23. The observations have prompted differing interpretations regarding animal behavior and cognition.
