Framing Analysis
NATO's top commander convened a videoconference of interested allies at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe on 19 August 2026 to discuss possible contributions for freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The meeting was explicitly not a NATO mission, with France and Britain leading efforts among roughly a dozen countries while allies avoided direct involvement in the Iran conflict. The strait previously carried about one-fifth of traded oil, and any long-term arrangement requires Iranian acquiescence.
