Framing Analysis
The National Science Foundation has announced plans to scale back the Ocean Observatories Initiative, a $368 million network of deep-ocean sensors operating in the Atlantic and Pacific. The descoping includes phased removal of infrastructure at the Endurance, Pioneer, Irminger Sea, and Station Papa arrays over approximately 15 months, with final recoveries scheduled for 2026 and 2027. Scientists have used data from the system for more than a decade.
