A new Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain has emerged in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, marking the third such epidemic since the strain was first identified in 2007. As of the latest reports, at least 139 deaths and 600 suspected cases have been recorded, with no vaccine or specific drug available for this variant that carries a roughly one-in-three fatality rate. The World Health Organization has declared the situation a public health emergency of international concern.
