Forty drownings occurred in France since 18 June, primarily among young people in unsupervised waters, coinciding with a heatwave that placed 54 departments under red alert. Overnight temperatures reached the highest levels since 1947 and the national heat index hit 21.6C. Approximately 29,000 lightning strikes were recorded across southern England.
