Framing Analysis
The Australian federal government will double maximum penalties for systematic breaches of the under-16 social media ban from $49.5 million to $99 million while strengthening the eSafety commissioner's information-gathering powers. The commissioner is investigating Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube for potential violations following the ban's introduction on 10 December. More than 5 million accounts held by under-16s have been removed, deactivated or restricted since that date.
