Framing Analysis
Genetic analysis of 13 bone samples from an archaeological site at Camarones in northern Chile recovered variola virus DNA from two individuals who lived approximately 500 years ago. The genomes belong to a now-extinct lineage positioned between medieval European strains and later variants. Earliest documented outbreaks in the Americas occurred on Hispaniola in 1518 following European arrival in 1492, with global eradication achieved in 1980.
