A wildfire that began near Saumos on July 22 burned more than 420 square kilometers, damaged or destroyed over 240 homes, and forced 220,000 evacuations in Gironde. The fire produced a pyrocumulonimbus cloud that generated lightning and erratic winds, igniting additional fires. Officials and France’s national firefighters federation described the cloud formation as unprecedented in the country.
