A wildfire west of Bordeaux has burned an area four times the size of Paris in the Gironde region. French authorities ordered more than 220,000 evacuations since last week but permitted nearly two-thirds of those displaced, including 84,000 across nine localities, to return home by Thursday. Firefighters continued suppression efforts while a key highway prepared to reopen.
