The Vatican stated on Thursday that the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) is in schism and that its priests and lay members are excommunicated following the ordination of four bishops without papal approval. The ordinations took place at the SSPX seminary in Écône, Switzerland. SSPX was founded in 1970 by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre and maintains 1,482 members as of November 2025.
