A Van Cleef & Arpels diamond necklace was stolen from Vienna’s Museum of Applied Arts on August 27. The piece, made of platinum with 673 diamonds totaling 200 carats, was commissioned in 1939 for the wedding of Princess Fawzia of Egypt and Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and valued by Sotheby’s between US$3.6 million and US$4.6 million in 2015. Reports also reference prior museum thefts including the 2003 Saliera heist and the Villena Treasure raid in Spain.
