The U.S. Army announced on a Wednesday plans to award up to $2.2 billion over five years to five companies for nuclear microreactors at five bases spanning New York to Texas as part of the Janus Program. No microreactors currently supply the U.S. commercial electric grid, and the Army expects more than 20 such reactors to be built and operated. Reactors are described as capable of running for years without refueling to provide baseload power to installations.
