UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is visiting Cyprus for the first time in his role to hold separate meetings with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on Tuesday, followed by joint talks on Wednesday in the UN buffer zone. The effort follows nearly a decade of deadlock since 2017 talks collapsed, with Christodoulides seeking resumption of a bizonal bicommunal federation and Erhurman conditioning participation on prior agreements regarding political equality. Cyprus has remained divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion that followed a Greek-engineered coup.
