Framing Analysis
Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood intends to amend the 1971 Immigration Act to permit deportation of Shabir Ahmed, a 73-year-old dual British-Pakistani citizen convicted in 2012 of child sexual offences. Ahmed was released on licence last week after serving part of a 22-year sentence and is subject to electronic monitoring and strict conditions. The amendment addresses a residency bar that currently prevents removal of certain pre-1973 Commonwealth citizens.
