Framing Analysis
A 63-percent-complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton known as Gus, discovered on private land in South Dakota in 2021, sold for $50.1 million at Sotheby's on July 14 after a 10-minute bidding war among seven participants. The specimen measures 11.6 meters in length, contains 183 fossilized bones, and dates to 72-66 million years ago. An anonymous buyer acquired the skeleton under U.S. property law that treats fossils found on private land as personal assets.
