Typhoon Dolphin, a Category 1 storm with sustained winds of 144 kph and gusts to 198 kph, approached islands between Kyushu and Okinawa on August 7. Japanese authorities ordered nearly 260,000 residents to evacuate, cancelled more than 500 flights, and Toyota suspended operations at nine factories. The storm followed a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Kumamoto prefecture the prior week that left 6,700 people in shelters.
