On July 21 2026 the Trump administration issued orders imposing 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion in annual Canadian imports including wine hockey sticks and cement under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930. The duties exempt energy potash and goods already subject to sector-specific tariffs take effect in 30 days and apply to products covered by the USMCA. Canada has previously retaliated against earlier U.S. tariffs by removing American liquor from provincial shelves.
