Three lionesses aged three, eleven, and fifteen died at Tama Zoological Park between Tuesday and Sunday with symptoms of dehydration and multiple organ failure. Ten of the zoo's sixteen lions have shown loss of appetite and decreased activity since mid-July, prompting closure of the enclosure. A zoo spokesperson attributed the deaths to suspected heatstroke amid Japan's record summer temperatures.
