Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government introduced a resolution in the Tamil Nadu assembly requiring the singing of Tamil Thai Vazhthu at the start of programmes in schools, universities, government offices and public institutions. The measure received support from DMK and AIADMK legislators. Vijay described Tamil as pure as a mother and equated it with life and emotions.
