Since the Taliban took power in August 2021, 2.4 million girls have been denied secondary education in Afghanistan, with schools closed to them in March 2022 and universities barred to women in December 2022. The country remains the only one with a formal nationwide prohibition on such education for females. Projections indicate the excluded population could approach four million by 2030 if current policies continue.
