Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration stated that a Chinese coast guard ship approached the Pratas Islands on June 5 2026 and an oceanographic survey vessel followed on June 6 in what it described as the first observed coordinated operation. The Pratas Islands lie more than 400 km from Taiwan; China claims the islands as its territory while Taiwan rejects those claims. Taiwan's National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu called the actions highly provocative.
