A Syrian court sentenced former President Bashar al-Assad, his brother Maher Assad, and former brigadier general Atef Najib to death for crimes against humanity and war crimes. The rulings occurred on Tuesday in proceedings that addressed a 14-year conflict that left approximately 500,000 people dead. One defendant was arrested in January 2025 while attempting to leave the country.
