The Supreme Court ruled that states may count mail ballots postmarked by Election Day even if received afterward, rejecting a Republican-led challenge to laws in more than half the states and the District of Columbia. The decision originated in a Mississippi case and preserves existing receipt deadlines ahead of the 2026 midterms. In just over half the affected states, the extended deadlines apply only to military and overseas voters.
