The Supreme Court announced it will hear consolidated cases challenging assault weapons bans in Illinois and Connecticut during its term beginning in October. The cases ask whether the Second and Fourteenth Amendments protect possession of AR-15 platform rifles and similar semiautomatic firearms. The Court previously declined to review a comparable Maryland ban.
