The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed Alabama officials' appeal in the case of death-row inmate Joseph Clifton Smith by a 5-4 vote, allowing a lower-court ruling to stand. That ruling found that executing Smith would violate the Eighth Amendment prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment because of his intellectual disability. The decision follows a 2002 precedent barring execution of intellectually disabled individuals convicted of capital crimes.
