Spain declared a national emergency for wildfires for the first time on Friday, with the interior ministry coordinating response to fires near Madrid and in Ávila province that prompted evacuation of more than 10,000 residents. France requested EU assistance for fires on its Atlantic coast and ordered evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula near Bordeaux, where at least 4,800 hectares burned. Disputed reports place French evacuations between 20,000 and 40,000 people.
