A train operated by Southern Rail derailed near Lewes on August 13 with approximately 150 passengers aboard, resulting in three overturned carriages and 20 people taken to hospital, including two with severe injuries. A major incident was declared, all passengers were evacuated, and Network Rail is investigating the undetermined cause alongside the Rail Accident Investigation Branch. The incident follows a separate June train collision north of London that killed one driver.
