The Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court sentenced Evergrande founder Xu Jiayin to life imprisonment on August 20 for large-scale financial fraud. The company and affiliates received fines exceeding $2 billion, while other executives received prison terms of up to 18 years. Evergrande collapsed with more than $300 billion in liabilities after 2020 borrowing regulations took effect.
