Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey have expanded an existing defense agreement into a trilateral pact under which an armed attack on any member is treated as an attack on all three. The agreement was signed in Mecca five months after a US-Israel bombing campaign against Iran that escalated into wider Gulf conflict and disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi publicly endorsed Muslim self-reliance in response.
