Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, a Salvadoran national with pre-existing conditions including diabetes, hypertension and epilepsy, was pronounced dead on August 1 at University Hospital in Newark after a medical emergency at the Delaney Hall detention facility. ICE reported that he received appropriate medical care, while family members alleged denial of medication and inadequate response. This marks the second death at the facility and contributes to a reported total of more than 50 deaths in ICE custody since January 2025.
