Framing Analysis
Reza Zarrab, a 42-year-old Turkish-Iranian gold trader, was sentenced to time served on July 14 by U.S. District Judge Richard Berman after pleading guilty in 2017 to conspiring to evade U.S. sanctions. Zarrab testified against a Halkbank executive, and the bank later reached a compliance-monitor agreement that led to dismissal of its charges. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the case as unlawful.
