Framing Analysis
Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, visited Lampedusa island on July 4 and prayed at a migrant cemetery and the Door of Europe memorial. During Mass he called for Europe to develop a long-term plan covering reception, protection, support, and integration of migrants while supporting development in countries of origin. The visit occurred on the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence at a primary Mediterranean arrival point for North African crossings.
