The Philippines rejected on July 10 statements from Chinese academics asserting sovereignty over the Batanes Islands following a June 30 symposium at Jinan University. The islands, located less than 200 km from Taiwan and midway between Taiwan and Luzon, hosted joint Philippine-US military drills in April and have a population of fewer than 20,000. Philippine officials described the claims as baseless while Beijing stated it does not comment on academic views.
