The Pentagon reduced its list of religious affiliation codes from over 200 to 31, dropping 180 entries, according to a memo released by Undersecretary of Defense Anthony Tata. A majority of service members already used only six codes prior to the change. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also directed chaplains to display religious insignia on uniforms instead of rank.
