Nejlai Mitchell, who operated tax preparation businesses in Lumberton and Hope Mills, North Carolina, pleaded guilty to conspiring to submit false tax returns claiming fraudulent refunds under the paid sick and family leave credit. The IRS disbursed approximately $13,890,697 in fraudulent refunds from returns filed between April 2022 and May 2023, with seven additional preparers also pleading guilty. An unverified report claimed a $60 million health care fraud scheme, but supported records show only the $13.9 million tax refund total.
