On June 1 the Nikkei share average touched an intraday record of 67,231.28 before closing at 66,934.33, driven largely by a 14 percent gain in SoftBank shares that lifted the company past Toyota in market value. The Topix index declined 0.4 percent on the same day. In South Korea the KOSPI rose 3.68 percent to close at 8,788.38 amid record trading volume and a 53 percent year-over-year increase in May exports.
