Nicaragua's government-controlled Congress voted in January 2025 to extend the presidential term by one year beyond the original November 2027 election date. President Daniel Ortega stated during a Sandinista anniversary speech that there would be no further elections. Ortega has held power since returning to the presidency in 2007 after first assuming it following the 1979 revolution.
