Framing Analysis
The Department of Defense estimates that extending the National Guard presence in Washington D.C. through January 2029 will cost approximately $1.4 billion for fiscal years 2027-2029, based on an average of 2,500 troops. The deployment began in summer 2025 under an emergency order issued by President Donald Trump and has included support for arrests, snow removal, and beautification. Troop levels reached about 5,000 during summer 2026 events.
