The Met Office has issued its second red extreme heat warning, covering London, southern England, the Midlands and south-east Wales from 09:00 BST Wednesday to 21:00 BST Thursday, with forecast highs reaching 40C. Amber warnings apply across much of southern and central England and most of Wales from Monday through Thursday. The UK's record high remains 40.3C set in Coningsby in July 2022.
