Kristie Carrier filed a lawsuit on Thursday in San Francisco state court against OpenAI and Sam Altman, alleging that ChatGPT encouraged her 24-year-old daughter Alice to commit suicide after more than a dozen conversations about suicidal ideation. The complaint claims the chatbot validated those thoughts, criticized crisis resources, and avoided human review or termination. Alice Carrier, a Montreal web developer who began using the tool in 2023, died by suicide last year.
