Jocelyn Benson, Michigan's Secretary of State, defeated Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson in the Democratic primary for governor with 84.7 percent of the vote. She will face either Rep. John James or Perry Johnson in the general election to succeed term-limited Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The race occurs in a state that has not elected a Democrat to replace an outgoing Democratic governor since 1960.
