Framing Analysis
Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has outlined plans to rebuild between 2 and 5 reactors by the 2040s and 11 to 14 by the 2050s, aiming for roughly 16 gigawatts of new capacity. The policy seeks to raise nuclear power to about 20 percent of the electricity mix by fiscal 2040 after only 15 of 33 operable units have restarted since the 2011 Fukushima shutdown. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi supports the approach, which follows last year's revision of the basic energy policy.
