Israeli troops have crossed the Litani River and captured Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon, marking the deepest incursion since 2000. The operation follows Hezbollah rocket and drone attacks that began on 2 March and a ceasefire announced more than six weeks before 31 May 2026. Lebanese authorities report over 3,370 deaths and 1.2 million displaced, while Israel reports 28 deaths and tens of thousands displaced in the north.
