Two humpback whales were documented traveling between breeding sites in eastern Australia and Brazil, a distance of approximately 14,500 km, through analysis of tail fluke images spanning four decades. Researchers used pattern-recognition software on more than 19,000 photographs contributed by research groups and citizen scientists to match the individuals. The findings establish the longest recorded migrations for the species based on available photo-identification data.
